When I was in Japan in 2006, breakfast was served for free in the hotel where I was staying in. Out of curiosity (when in Japan, eat what the Japanese eat!), I ordered the the traditional breakfast. The whole meal is consisted of grilled fish, fermented soy beans (natto) soup (miso), pickles, dried seaweed (nori), steamed rice and other side dishes.
For the second time, I ordered another breakfast meal that is also traditional Japanese (photo above). The usual soup, fermented soy beans, seaweed, pickles, steamed rice with fresh egg. The egg is simply mixed in with the rice and soy sauce. It is known as tamago kake gohan, or, simply translated, egg-sauce over rice. As you can see in the picture, the bowl of rice is traditionally placed on left side with the soup on the right. Both traditional breakfast sets were good and light, just enough to give my stomach a little more space to accomodate more food in a little while.

fermented soy bgeans and pickles for breakfast?
oh.. and is the egg raw?
I'm going to have to think about this.
Other than the raw egg it looks delicious. I like eating savory things for breakfast. In fact, I just made myself fried rice with egg and ham this morning :).
U're making me hungry...but dinner will only be served at least 3 more hours later...
Gutom nako ah.
That is a huge breakfast. I have always wanted to go to Japan. Atleast I know what their breakfasts are like now. hehe
Happy WW.
That looks indeed very yummy and so far everthing I have eaten in japonese Restaurants was very good. But for a breakfast ? I could eat that at noon but not early morning ! Anyway I never eat breakfast, I only have coffee.
I'd love to travel someday. But I might have to keep some granolas bars stashed in my luggage just in case.

I really do love Japanese food and miss those Japanese breakfasts that, alas, no Japanese restaurant I know outside of Japan serves!
Looks pretty heavy to me. I'm not used to having rice in the morning I guess. But true, when in Rome, do what the Romans do :)
Interesting post and that looks delicious.
FRee breakfast? Hope the hotel stay was not too expensive as they may have already factor in the breakfast.
